Chicago is the third largest city in the States. It is located in the middle of America, at the converging area between the world’s largest Lake Michigan and Chicago River. The summer is very hot while the winter is not that cold. It’s windy throughout the year, thus being dubbed a Wind City. It has large population of blacks and Jews.

Destroyed in a huge fire in 1871, the city was later reconstructed. All the different-shaped and colorful high rises of the new city have made it a museum of architecture. The number of sky scrappers in Chicago is next only to New York. The Sears Tower in the city center is the highest building in America with 110 floors reaching 443 meters into the sky.

Used to be “Mother of Industry” of America, Chicago is now home to numerous hi-tech corridors instead of outdated sunset industries. It is now dubbed Silicon Prairie of America. On 1 May 1886, hundreds of thousands of workers took to the street of Chicago to strike for the eight-hour work scheme. Both the International Labor Day on May 1 and the international Women’s Day on March 8 originate from this city, which has a glorious tradition of workers’ movements.
